Samuel W. Shaw School

Mechwave provided HVAC, plumbing and fire protection consulting services for a new 800 student middle school designed to achieve LEED Silver rating. The Shawnessy Somerset Middle School (Samuel W. Shaw) was the first school that was committed to the LEED® process by the Calgary Board of Education.  The HVAC system is constant volume with heating water radiation cabinets for the perimeter zones and reheat coils for the interior zones.  Demand control ventilation is utilized to increase the energy efficiency of the constant volume air system.  The design utilized condensing boilers with piping systems that minimizes return water temperature and maximizes the energy efficiency of the boilers. Water conserving fixtures are also utilized in the school.  The building is noncombustible construction and fully sprinklered in accordance with NFPA 13.
